Tesla's next vehicle Gigafactory will be located in Monterrey, Mexico. This news was confirmed by CEO Elon Musk during a recent investor day presentation. Despite the announcement, not many details were provided about the new factory, such as when construction will begin or when the company plans to start production. However, Tesla expects the next generation platform to be a high-volume product and plans to move quickly on it in the next couple of years. The factory will not take production away from other Gigafactories but will be supplemental to Tesla's existing production capacity.
The rumors about Tesla building a Gigafactory in Mexico have been circulating for months, with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recently announcing that Monterrey had been selected as the location for the new factory. Although this news may come as a disappointment to Canada, which was also in the running for a potential Gigafactory, according to comments made by Musk last year, it's possible that another type of facility, such as a battery factory, could still be built in Canada in the future.
"Our next Gigafactory will be in Mexico, manufacturing our next-gen vehicle," Tesla tweeted. As the company moves forward with plans to build in Mexico, the automotive industry will be eagerly waiting to see what the next generation vehicle will bring and how it will be produced at the new Gigafactory in Monterrey.
