Apple's M2 Pro MacBook Pro Falls Short in Gaming Review
Tech YouTuber Dawid Coleman, of "Dawid Does Tech Stuff", recently put the 2023 MacBook Pro through its paces in a gaming review, and the results were less than impressive. Despite Apple's efforts to make its Mac line a serious player in the gaming industry by equipping it with its own powerful and efficient M2 Pro and M2 Mac chips, the new MacBook Pro models still lag behind their PC competitors.
Dawid tested the 16-inch MacBook Pro, powered by the M2 Pro chip with 12 CPU cores and 19 GPU cores, 16GB of Unified Memory, and 512GB of SSD storage, across several popular games such as Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Resident Evil Village. The latter is optimized for Apple Silicon.
The YouTuber found that while the MacBook Pro was capable of delivering decent FPS numbers, especially in lighter games, the overall gaming experience was subpar. The display was a particular point of contention for Dawid, who noted that it greatly impacted input latency and motion rendering, two critical aspects for a good gaming display. The display also suffered from smearing, ghosting, and significant input lag, although Dawid suggested that the experience could be improved by turning off the "camera acceleration" feature in games.
Despite its impressive Mini LED display for content creation and consumption, the MacBook Pro falls short in its ability to handle games and motion-heavy graphics. Dawid also encountered issues launching the Mac-optimized Resident Evil Village and connecting a wireless controller to the MacBook.
In conclusion, Dawid stated that the MacBook Pro wouldn't be a good option for gaming due to its display's shortcomings. He found that the gaming experience improved significantly when he connected the MacBook to an external gaming monitor.
