Tesla is looking to patent the ultra-hard steel alloy used in its upcoming Cybertruck. The automaker is seeking to own a patent on the material, which it developed in-house and is also used by SpaceX, another company controlled by CEO Elon Musk.
The Cybertruck has drawn attention for its unique exoskeleton design and ultra-hard steel body, which Tesla now wants to patent. The patent application, titled “Ultra-Hard Cold-Worked Steel Alloy,” explains how the material is used in the vehicle, with the exterior panels contributing to its structural performance. The corrosion resistance of the monolithic metal sheet allows for the exterior to be utilized without an anti-corrosion coating or paint, and the exterior surface does not include paint.
There is no official information on who will produce the new steel for Tesla, but Steel Dynamics, which operates a new steel-making plant near Tesla’s facility in Texas, has been rumored to have a contract with the EV maker.
Tesla’s Cybertruck has already generated significant buzz for its unique design and innovative use of materials, and the company’s push to patent the ultra-hard steel alloy only adds to the excitement surrounding the highly anticipated vehicle.
