Discovering culture in Germany's transformed Ruhr region
Germany's Ruhr region is home to more than just industrial history. Where factories and mines once stood, fascinating new attractions now shine.
One of the top draws is the Zollverein coal mine near Essen. Named the world's most beautiful coal mine, its main shaft rises impressively above the landscape. Today visitors explore exhibits within the historic complexes. Two noteworthy museums tell the area's industrial story through art and artifacts.
Essen itself has transformed as well, as the European Capital of Culture in 2010 and Green Capital in 2017. In addition to architectural gems like its Gothic cathedral, the city hosts unique events like an "augmented reality" experience transporting spectators to 1880s Essen streets.
Another converted site is Oberhausen's giant gas tank, now holding vibrant exhibitions inside its towering walls. Nearby Duisburg offers unexpected nature trails through former steelworks. Its Landscape Park appeared in "The Hunger Games" films too.
Art and activities merge beautifully throughout the Ruhr. While historic furnaces stand guard, visitors bike past or view the scenery from platforms atop disused blast structures. Germany's industrial soul lives on here - but with a creative twist welcoming all.
